Dear KPR families,
It’s hard to believe we are already at the end of the second week of school! As students, staff and families settle into routines, I hope that everyone can reflect on and celebrate a successful start to the year.
Our shared focus continues to be on fostering safe, inclusive places where we set high expectations for success. We continue to focus on seeing all students as capable learners, sparking their curiosity and elevating their voices. We know how important it is for students to feel seen, heard and reflected in the learning resources, spaces and people around them.
As we work together to support student success, I would like to invite interested families to participate in a meaningful webinar focused on balancing technology use and building healthy relationships, sponsored by the Parent Involvement Committee - Rebuilding Connection: Raising Socially Smart Kids in an Online World – on September 27. More details are included in the NEWS section below.
I want to highlight that September 10 was World Suicide Prevention Day. Prevention begins with mental health promotion. We're helping students build skills to manage stress, solve problems, and know when—and how—to seek support at school and in their community. We’re also supporting educators and families to recognize when a student might be struggling with their mental health and the resources that can help, including access to services provided by school-based Mental Health Clinicians. Kids Help Phone Canada and KPR’s new Parent Portal for Mental Health, Technology and Substance Use also offer helpful resources and information for students, staff and families.
For information about upcoming days of significance, such as Powley Day on September 19 and Rosh Hashanah on September 23-24, please visit the Events section of the KPR website. Follow @kprschools on Facebook and Instagram for timely updates and #WeAreKPR highlights!
Sincerely,
Rita Russo
Director of Education

Autumn greetings,
While students are off for the PA Day, many KPR staff are engaged in meaningful learning opportunities to support student success.
KPR students and staff will acknowledge Tuesday, September 30th as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, through age-appropriate learning. Orange Shirt Day opens the door to conversations on all aspects of residential schools, and meaningful discussion about the effects of residential schools and the legacy they have left behind. This year is the 10th anniversary of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action – a reminder that the work must continue in schools and communities.
Orange Shirt Day, and Truth and Reconciliation Week September 22-26, reaffirm that all those who have been affected matter – and that Every Child Matters.
There are many important days in October that we will recognize through KPR’s website and social media @kprschools on Instagram and Facebook. Yom Kippur begins the evening of October 1, National Custodian Day is October 2, October 4 is National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit Peoples (MMIWG2S), and World Teachers’ Day is October 5. Learn more about these and other days of significance on KPR’s Events Calendar.
Best wishes,

Dear KPR Families,
We’re surrounded by the peak of fall colours, and this time of year presents a beautiful backdrop for both indoor and outdoor learning opportunities! The collaboration and partnership happening in schools and behind the scenes, to create community-focused activities, such as field trips and other events, is remarkable. It brings me joy to see the impact of this collective work, and all the many ways students, staff, and school communities embrace the #WeAreKPR spirit!
Student Trustees, Julia Redwood and Nevyn Ghori are perfect examples of the #WeAreKPR spirit in action. Representing over 35,000 students across the board, Julia and Nevyn are passionate about amplifying student voice and are focused on key priorities like accessibility and transparency! I invite you to watch this short video to get to know Nevyn and Julia.
This week, schools recognized Child Care Worker and Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Appreciation Day on October 21. This day shines a spotlight on the important work of Registered ECEs and staff working in schools – both in full-day Kindergarten and school-based child care settings. We appreciate the professionalism, skills and dedication of all staff who work with young children.
We also celebrated School Bus Driver Appreciation Day on October 22. We thank all school bus drivers and transportation staff for their dedicated service and commitment to providing safe transportation for students – and for playing an integral role in our local education system.
As we look ahead to November, we welcome Indigenous Peoples Awareness Month, with many important days of Indigenous significance. For information about these and other days of significance, please visit KPR’s Events Calendar.
Sincerely,
Rita Russo

Dear KPR families and caregivers,
As we near the end of Veterans’ Week, and approach Remembrance Day and Indigenous Veterans’ Day, we join Canadians across the country in honouring and reflecting on the service, courage and sacrifice of those who served, and those who continue to serve courageously in times of war, conflict, and peace.
During November, designated in KPR as Indigenous Peoples Awareness Month, we recognize intentional time for students and staff to expand their learning, celebrate Indigenous excellence, and amplify the voices of First Nation, Métis and Inuit peoples. Today is Inuit Day, and this week was Treaties Recognition Week, an important opportunity to learn more about Treaty rights and relationships. As many of you know, KPR schools are situated on land within the Williams Treaties of 1923, signed with the Mississauga and Chippewa Nations.
I am grateful to KPR students and staff for their thoughtful engagement not only during November, but throughout the entire year. Schools and classes are so fortunate to learn directly from authentic Indigenous voices, Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and I encourage everyone to share what they learn with others.
For information about significant days and events at KPR, such as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week from November 17-21, please visit KPR’s Events Calendar and follow @kprschools on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.
Have a wonderful weekend,
